Tatami Tsunami!
26 March :: 07:08 pm
We broke down and bought three tatami mats for our "living room" yesterday. The blankets that I had duct-taped to the floor (left by the last person that lived here) when I moved in just weren't doing it for us anymore. The tatami mats are wonderful! We kept the blankets underneath so the area is padded. I think it will be so nice to have something so cool and comfortable for the upcoming dreaded Tokyo summer. Looks a little more sophisticated than fuzzy blue blankets with the familiar D.T. silver edging, too. We're slowing becoming grown ups! Well, very slowly, but one step at a time, right?

Anyway, in researching tatami-mat care (how grown up is that!) tonight, I came across this website. The information was very useful, actually; but the design... wow. I know that there are awards out there for bad web design, and I would like to nominate this one. To www.tatami.com.my... please don't sue me.

The Fuge from our apartment roof The Fuge from our apartment roof

Ted Nugent was called "the Nuge." Why shouldn't Fuji-san be called "The Fuge?"
Anne, sick and cold, trying to enjoy the view. Anne, sick and cold, trying to enjoy the view.

It was a clear day.. this was the first time I had been outside in 3 days.
The Fuge at sunset... FROM OUR APARTMENT! The Fuge at sunset... FROM OUR APARTMENT!

Soon we realized it was unnecessary to expose ourselves to the unpleasantries of a 6-story high early March roof. Why, you ask? Our windows provide the same view!
More Fuge from OUR APARTMENT!!! More Fuge from OUR APARTMENT!!!

One last shot from the apartment. One last shot from the apartment.

Watching the Sunrise From Our Roof Watching the Sunrise From Our Roof

Anne had stayed up all night working on her PechaKucha Night presentation. It was Jeff's idea to share some beers and watch the sunrise.
Oh, I Forgot to Mention... Oh, I Forgot to Mention...

It was about 7 C (45 F) outside and the wind was blowing around 35 mph.
Though Extreme Bundling Was Done... Though Extreme Bundling Was Done...

We were still quite chilly.
I Was Once Voted Most Hot After An All-Nighter. I Was Once Voted Most Hot After An All-Nighter.

I think I look like one of Tom Huck's prints.
Redemptive Photo? Redemptive Photo?

Or is it just time to go to bed?
We Lasted 15 Minutes. We Lasted 15 Minutes.

It was just too damn cold.

We might have failed at the first sunrise (the day before, after the all-nighter), but Jeff woke up early the next day and took these photos. Anne didn't even stir.

Our New Tatamis, Photographed by Jeff Our New Tatamis, Photographed by Jeff (Posted and Commented On by Anne)

This Is Our Apartment, To Those Of You Who Haven't Seen It Before This Is Our Apartment, To Those Of You Who Haven't Seen It Before

Doesn't That Look Comfy? Doesn't That Look Comfy?

There are many, many layers of blankets underneath the mats.
Layers! We Love Layers! Layers! We Love Layers!

Nice Transition From Floor to Bed Nice Transition From Floor to Bed

More Layers! More Layers!

We loved the tatamis so much we slept on them last night. With a few blankets on top of the mats and our HUGE down comforter on top of us, it was the closest to a ryokan (traditional Japanese hotel) this apartment has ever been. No seventeen-course Japanese breakest made for us in the morning, though.

I Had to Beg For These
I Had to Beg For These

These came from the hyaku-yen store (equivalent of $1 store). Knock-off Gel Gems. We bought the "Love," "Lucky," "Happy Day," "Fight!!!," hearts, circles, and squares packages. Then I arranged them to make a perfectly Japenglish sentence. It reads "I Love Lucky Happy Fight Day!!!" Considering that the packaging on a knife we bought last night reads "Miscellaneous goods that make our life happy and easy. THREE MINUTES HAPPINESS, it creates your happiness," I figured my sentence was pretty mild.

Unconscious Mutterings Word Association

  1. Glass castle:: We just put fake ice in the little sink-thing on top of our toilet. Don't know why, but that's the first thing that comes to mind. Then I think of a Ramune bottle. After that, I go to the few glass structures that we learned about in Architecture History whose names I've long forgotten.

  2. Preserved:: My brother drank three-snake wine in China last week. It's wine that is so strong, it preserves the THREE DEAD SNAKES that are soaking in it. Yum.

  3. Jealousy:: Oh, jealousy. My mind draws a blank. Hrm. I'm jealous of.. nothing right now. That's good.

  4. Territory:: Where did countries ever get the idea that expanding into other people's territory was a good idea? Seen 'Hotel Rwanda?'

  5. Coffee:: Japan really doesn't have great coffee. I started drinking more coffee than usual last summer in Dallas. Espresso, imported fair trade coffees... Good stuff. Now, it seems like everything here is roasted until it's burnt and then boiled like crazy. I don't know why it tastes so terrible. Maybe it's the Tokyo water (not that Tokyo water is bad.. but there are a ton of chemicals in it that might do weird things when heated...)? The last time I had coffee to drink was Thursday night, when I pulled the all-nighter for PechaKucha. Jeff made it-- his first time!-- and it wasn't half bad. Long story short- In America, I drink my coffee black; in Japan, I have to ask the waitress for more sugar and creamer than is on the table.

  6. Stephen:: Honestly, the first thing that comes to mind is Stephen from Laguna Beach. I got addicted to junk TV in Dallas. It was nice to have the time to be able to watch a few solid hours of reality shows and the like every evening. Beat studying Japanese. Then, I bought the iMac and the TV went into hibernation. Moral of the story: Marble Blast Gold wins out over MTV and FOX.

  7. Slut:: I hate that word. It's derogatory and sexist.

  8. Dynamic:: Dynamic makes me think of computer programming and then of Archi-speak. I should have used that word more in presentations, I think.

  9. Daybreak:: I've seen two of these in the past week. That's about 600% more than usual. I like being up early in the morning by default-- a.k.a. staying up past sunrise. I dread waking up that early, though. It doesn't matter what time I went to bed- if I wake up and it's still dark outside or the sun is just rising, I'm tired.

  10. Dew:: Dew. Leads me to think about mildew. And there are a few spots of it growing on one of our windows. A humid apartment has its drawbacks.
